About Dirofilaria immitis

Dirofilaria immitis, commonly known as the heartworm, is a parasitic nematode (roundworm) that causes heartworm disease in dogs, cats, and other mammals. Transmitted through mosquito bites, this parasite primarily infects the cardiovascular system, leading to severe and potentially fatal complications if left untreated. Clinical Signs

In Dogs (Most Susceptible):
  • Early Stage: Often asymptomatic, but microfilariae may be detected in blood.
  • Moderate Stage: Coughing, fatigue during exercise, mild weight loss, and decreased appetite.
  • Severe Stage:
    • Labored breathing (due to blocked pulmonary arteries or heart failure);
    • Fluid accumulation in the abdomen or chest;
    • Coughing up blood;
    • Liver or kidney damage;
    • Sudden collapse or death in advanced cases.
In Cats (Less Common but More Severe):
Cats are less likely to develop adult worms, but even a few worms can cause severe reactions:
  • Acute respiratory distress (e.g., coughing, wheezing);
  • Vomiting, lethargy, or loss of appetite;
  • "Heartworm-associated respiratory disease (HARD)": Inflammation in the lungs due to larval migration, which can be fatal.
