About Ehrlichia canis

Ehrlichia canis is an intracellular bacterium causing canine monocytic ehrlichiosis (CME), a tick - borne disease. Spread mainly by brown dog ticks (Rhipicephalus sanguineus), it invades dog monocytes, leading to severe complications if untreated.
 

Clinical Signs

  • Acute: Fever, lethargy, appetite loss, enlarged lymph nodes, mild bleeding due to low platelets.
  • Subclinical: Few/no obvious signs, but subtle blood cell changes.
  • Chronic: Severe bleeding, whole - body blood cell drop, weakness, weight loss, possible neurological/ocular issues, and organ damage.
