About Feline Panleukopenia
Feline Panleukopenia (also known as feline distemper or cat parvovirus) is a highly contagious and potentially fatal viral disease caused by the feline parvovirus (FPV), a member of the Parvoviridae family. It primarily affects cats, especially kittens under 6 months of age and unvaccinated individuals. The virus is extremely resilient in the environment, surviving for months to years on contaminated surfaces, food bowls, or bedding. Transmission occurs through direct contact with infected feces, vomit, or bodily fluids, as well as indirect contact with contaminated objects. FPV targets rapidly dividing cells, particularly those in the bone marrow, intestines, and lymphoid tissues, leading to severe immune suppression and gastrointestinal damage.
Clinical Signs
Signs vary by age and infection severity, with kittens often showing more severe symptoms:
- Common Symptoms: High fever (up to 41°C/106°F), lethargy, loss of appetite, vomiting (often frequent and severe), and profuse, watery diarrhea (sometimes bloody).
- Severe Cases: Panleukopenia (drastic drop in white blood cells, weakening immunity), dehydration (sunken eyes, dry gums), abdominal pain, and in advanced stages, shock, seizures, or death—especially if left untreated. Pregnant cats may experience miscarriage or birth of kittens with neurological defects.
