About Feline Infectious Peritonitis
Feline Infectious Peritonitis (FIP) is a severe and often fatal viral disease caused by mutated strains of the feline coronavirus (FCoV). While most FCoV infections are harmless (causing mild gastrointestinal issues), certain mutations enable the virus to invade and replicate in white blood cells, spreading throughout the body and triggering intense inflammation. It primarily affects cats, with kittens, senior cats, and immunocompromised individuals at higher risk. Transmission occurs through exposure to infected feces (e.g., shared litter boxes), though direct spread between cats is rare. The virus is not highly resilient in the environment but can persist in contaminated areas for short periods.
Clinical Signs
Signs vary by form, with both types causing progressive illness:
- Wet (Effusive) Form: Accumulation of fluid in the abdomen (causing a swollen belly) or chest (leading to difficulty breathing), lethargy, loss of appetite, and weight loss.
- Dry (Non-Effusive) Form: No fluid buildup but widespread inflammation affecting organs like the eyes (cloudy lesions), kidneys, liver, or brain. Symptoms include fever, eye discharge, neurological issues (e.g., incoordination, seizures), and organ-specific dysfunction.
